Every so often, a soap star surprises me by revealing an unusual passion or hobby. Earlier this year, EastEnders actress Lacey Turner told me about her penchant for making furniture and more recently, I chatted to Emmerdale’s Samantha Giles about being a witch.
Yep, a witch. Not the sort with a beaky nose and a pointy black hat, but a wiccan as she calls herself, who puts together magic spell kits. These are designed to help people, not turn enemies into toads etc, although that would be useful at times. She has spells for finding love, new baby charms and even kits that could help you sell your house – free estate agent not included. Sam sells her spells (try saying that after three glasses of vino) through word of mouth or via her Facebook page Samantha’s Spells and even puts finding her husband down to the power of magic.
‘Before I met my husband, I cast a love spell and two months later, he walked past me and I nearly passed out because he was so gorgeous,’ she confesses.
Sam’s going to be selling some of her spells to friends and colleagues at work in a bid to raise money for Text Santa, so we might see a lot of good fortune amongst the Emmerdale cast in 2015.
Do I believe in spells? To be honest, I am not entirely sure. I certainly believe in the notion of attracting what you put out there and I don’t think you can underestimate the power of positive thinking.
Back in the summer of 1998 I bought a little leather pouch filled with love charms which I wore around my neck. They are what my son calls the ‘hippy years’ – I did own a tie-dye dress and learned the art of Reiki healing. However, I did not want a man with similar leanings – mainly because the smell of patchouli makes me retch. Anyway, I told my little love pouch that all I wanted was a kind man who smelt of Imperial Leather, had his own teeth and enough cash to go Dutch at The Harvester.
I found that man, but was it to do with the love pouch or my positive mental attitude? I don’t know, but I gave the pouch to a single woman I met on holiday. I have no idea if it worked for her, but very much hope that it did.
