You’d think that after writing about Emmerdale for the best part of 15 years, I’d be a bit of an expert. If I were ever to go on Mastermind, it would be my specialist subject so you can’t blame me for feeling quietly confident when the show’s press team held a special pub quiz about all things Emmerdale for members of the press.

I knew it was going to be tough when I found out that Tony Audenshaw (Bob Hope) had set the questions. Also, it didn’t take me long to work out that as I can barely remember what I had for breakfast by tea time, recalling dim and distant storylines was going to prove tricky.

Some questions, such as ‘Did Andy and Katie get married the first time round?’ were a doddle, but others such as ‘Name three Emmerdale couples who got married on Christmas Day’ left me stumped. I could name four of the five suspects who were under the spotlight for bludgeoning Cain Dingle but I couldn’t say which characters were born on Christmas Day – I knew that Belle Dingle was, but the other person….Would you know?

I had Joe Gill (Finn Barton) on my team, but he was no match for Kelvin Fletcher (Andy Sugden) who lead his team to victory. However, after 17 years on the show, we expected him to do well – and to look smug about it.

I am sad to report that our team, The Foolpack, came last. Still, there’s always next year…

Joe Gill minus the glasses lead us not to victory.
