Hollyoaks never hold back when it comes to stunts and this week they air one of their biggest ever – a catastrophic train crash which endangers all on board, namely the wedding party guests of Porsche McQueen and Lockie Campbell.
To film the scenes, which air on Wednesday this week (Nov 12th C4 18.30), the team at Lime Pictures purchased and crashed a real train.
The train ploughs into a red mini driven by Sienna that gets stuck on the line. It comes off the rails, flies into the air and eventually explodes. I watched the scenes of carnage at a special screening in London last week and left the venue sweaty palmed and in a state of shock – it’s certainly full on for a teatime show.
Director Graeme Harper explained that the crew worked with the East Lancs Railway Society in Bury who made sure that the train was safe for filming purposes.
The scenes were shot over a course of two weeks and at the weekend, the Society put tarpaulins over the wreckage.
‘I thought it was because of bad weather and when I asked, they explained that they were changing all the locomotives into Thomas the Tank Engine characters at the weekend. There were lots of young people coming along and they didn’t want them to go past this horrific train wreck,’ laughs Graeme.
The same train was used to film party scenes whilst it was in motion, it was crashed and then filming resumed once it had tipped over.
‘I did my own stunts,’ reveals actress Jorgie Porter who plays Theresa. ‘One of them was extremely dangerous. The train crash will change people’s lives in Hollyoaks forever.’
It’s definitely one to watch – although you may need a miniature in your briefcase if you commute to work the next day!
